Too many tied for second place to list this week.

Apophysis Challenge #130

Journal Entry: Mon May 7, 2012, 5:03 AM

Welcome to another week of challenges. Not much new happening here on my end. Planning a big website overhaul in the upcoming month. Complete redesign with new features, new products, new artwork and a new portfolio on the graphic design domain. The blog will also be receiving a much needed face-lift! An often requested feature of a one page checkout will also be implemented on StanRagets.com. It's something I've wanted for a long time, but didn't understand how to implement and it is now a standard feature with my shopping cart software! :D

The runner up in our challenges for the past week is ~snupi988.

Winner of Challenge #128 & Feature

Congratulations on the win ~mahaon!!! :yay:

Apophysis Challenge #129

Journal Entry: Mon Apr 30, 2012, 4:52 AM

What lies in store for this week's challenge? No one knows! :evillaugh:

Please keep in mind that the rules for the challenge are clearly stated in every journal for your convenience. Additionally I'd like to mention that voting is open for a full week for the entries that are currently on display, and not for the new ones that are coming in for that same week. Early votes before voting begins can be very confusing when I'm also getting last minute ones. So for example, this week we'll be examining and voting on entries from challenge #128. Thank you very much for your cooperation.

Our runner up was ~mahaon.

Winner of Challenge #127

Congratulations *Lia01 on the win of the painting challenge!

I definitely need to get a better system for keeping track of the suggestions and challenges. I have modified this week's challenge to a suggestion given to us by *Lia01. Hopefully we haven't done this one already as well! :) Thank you for keeping an alert eye and helping me out!

Challenge #124

Pushing The Envelope

We have accomplished many challenges in the past where we've worked to emulate something. It may be a certain painter's style, an object in real-life, or other things. This week, we're going to try something a little tricky. I'm not sure how the results will come out, but I'm certain we'll have some entertaining entries to look at.

This week we are going to make a fractal to emulate our favorite website! As crazy as it sounds, I can see our entries being very cool. Bear in mind that you don't have to necessarily duplicate the websites look completely. Capture the feel of the site. Use it's colors. Make it flow just as the site as a whole would. Here's a really nice chance to put your artistic and fractal skills to the test!

No limitations on this week's challenge.

As always, have fun and stay thirsty my friends!

Challenge #122

Out of the Box

Literally! Yes, our job this week is to create a literal interpretation of something coming out of a box. First off, we have to create a box of some sort... Then, I'm quite excited to see what everyone has coming out of their box! Silly? Yes, a bit. At the same time, I think this will help us exercise some (possibly) new skills and creativity, especially if you fancy using a bit of xaos.

Just a few quick guidelines for this challenge:
  • Minimum of 3 transforms.

  • Maximum of 20 transforms.

  • Variation Limitations: No julia or derivatives with julia in the name (i.e. julian, juliascope...)

Apophysis Challenge #121

Journal Entry: Mon Mar 5, 2012, 6:40 AM

New CSS :w00t:  If you see any problems with it, let me know and I'll try to get them fixed for next week. :)

Our runner up for the Funny Challenge was =Lupsiberg

Before we announce the winner, I have an announcement of my own.

Art Cards (ACEOs)

I want to introduce something relatively new to me, but for some of you perhaps old news. Art Cards Editions and Originals (ACEOs). They are a very cool way to invest in artwork without spending a ton of cash. I currently have 3 limited editions of ten available of my some of my most popular fractals. The cards are $7.99 a piece, hand numbered and signed on the back. As with all the artwork on my website, shipping is free in the US. If you are out of the US and you want to buy some cards, please send me a message and I'll get an invoice to you with proper shipping charges, as I believe right now my site will overcharge you on shipping for such small and easily ship-able items. (It's currently set up to handle large packages out of country...go virtuemart and it's poor shipping options!) I'll see what I can do to correct that in the upcoming days. In any case, you can view the cards and get more information about them at my website. I took the extra step of having them gloss coated for extra protection of the artwork and card itself.

Winner of Challenge #119 & Feature

Congratulations to *allthenightlong for her win!

Challenge #121

Stained Glass

Our challenge this week comes by way of suggestion from =Lupsiberg. She actually suggested this challenge quite a while back, and I put it into my suggestions folder, and it seems to have been overlooked for a while. I do apologize for that!

As with all tutorial challenges, you need to learn the style exemplified in the tutorial, and then put your own spin on the design. The tutorial is thumbnailed below.

Challenge #120

Imitation

Charles Caleb Colton said "Imitation is the sincerest form of flattery." This week presents us with our Pushing the Envelope series of challenges. No matter how many cool and new fractals I see, I'm still often drawn back to the originators of Apophysis and their incredible work. This week we're going to try to create something very simililar to this piece by `JoelFaber below.

Your work doesn't have to be exact, but strive to get it as close as possible to the piece.

I'd also like some feedback on this sort of challenge. Like it, hate it? If you have suggestions of other pieces to imitate please send me a note so that they can be included in future versions of Pushing the Envelope.

As always, have fun and stay thirsty my friends!

Our challenge for this week comes to us by suggestion of *zweeZwyy. She has suggested that we make Funny fractals. I'll leave the interpretation up to you as to what direction you wish to take this challenge. Anything crude or NSFW will be excluded from the challenge. *zweeZwyy has a folder she's set up that includes some fractals you may want to browse through for inspiration: [link] .

Challenge #118

Lava

Yes, you've read it correctly. This week we'll be trying to simulate fractal lava. It has so many interesting and unique characteristics. In the movies, fractal math is often used to simulate lava, including in the Star Wars series. I was originally going to include some variation restrictions with this challenge, but then opted not to in order to encourage more creativity and variety.

Apophysis Challenge #116

Journal Entry: Mon Jan 30, 2012, 6:57 AM
Special Announcement

Do you think fractals look cool on the computer screen? Of course you do, otherwise I doubt you'd be looking at my artwork or any other fractals on dA! I've been hearing more and more lately about how much cooler my artwork looks hanging on a wall as opposed to on the screen or in a book. At the risk of sounding incredibly vain, I must say that it does look so much better on the wall than on the screen. Part of this is due to the amazing printer I have working with me to bring all of my digital work to birth the real world. This has both its drawbacks (costs) and its benefits (awesome looks, archival and superbly high quality work and materials, ultra sturdy construction, etc.).

As a special thank you to all of my deviantArt family, I am providing you with a discount code to my website. I truly appreciate all the support you have given me by your comments, your watches of my account, your strong support with the Apophysis Challenges and more! To show my appreciation, I'm doing something that I've never done before in providing this discount. I've also changed my website over to provide free shipping on all orders within the contiguous United States. Use the discount code DAROCKS to get a 12% discount on all artwork on my site. Share the code with your family and friends. The code will be available until the posting of the next challenge. As always, if you have any questions or concerns (or if something on my site isn't working right, remember I haven't offered a discount like this before) just send me a note here or from my contact page). Visit StanRagets.com today and don't forget your discount code!

Thank you all for being such an amazing group of people! :D :D :D

Now back to your regularly scheduled program...

Challenge #116

Bilateral Symmetry
This week's rules are relatively simple. Your fractal must exhibit Bilateral Symmetry. Plain and simple after that crazy clock challenge!
If you want to see Apophysis generate bilateral symmetry, go into your settings then to the "Random" tab. On the left-hand side you should see a "forced symmetry" section. You can select bilateral symmetry from this menu. Click ok. Then press ctrl+b to generate a new random batch.

Let's see what kind of cool fractal art we can come up utilizing bilateral symmetry!

Challenge #113

Feeling Blue
A while back we introduced a new type of challenge; forcing the background color to be one specific color for all the fractals. If you were around then and recall, the background color was straight up red. That challenge was very well received, and many requests to continue it were also received. Therefore, this week, we'll be looking at blue backgrounds. The color must be: red=0 green=0 blue=255. There are no other restrictions for this challenge. Let your creativity flow!!!

I'm certainly looking forward to seeing the beautiful and entertaining creations you come up with!

First off, thank you all for the entries and votes during the past week despite all the extra festivities and action you're seeing. It's great to see such a loyal group of supporters for the challenges!

Heads up as we have a new rule added. Please make sure you read over them this week, and check from time to time that you're complying with them. I appreciate it too, when others bring to my attention things I miss, as it's a big job to keep these challenges running.

Our runner up for this week is *zweeZwyy.

Linear

I looked back through the past challenges as I thought for a certainty that we had done a linear only challenge at one point or another, however I could not find one. Therefore, at the request of *TaraRoys we are having a Linear only challenge this week. Your goal this week is to make a fractal that is pleasing to the eye out of only the linear variation.
